1. Ask the Right Interview Questions
Never hire a consultant based on a quick phone call. During your initial meeting, be sure to ask:
- Have you completed projects similar to my scope in this specific municipality? (Local bylaw knowledge is crucial).
- Who will be my main point of contact during the design phase?
- What is your estimated timeline for securing permits?
2. Review Past Portfolios and References
Always ask to see examples of their completed work. More importantly, ask if you can speak to a past client. A consultant’s ability to handle revisions, budget changes, and city feedback is just as important as their design skills.
3. Compare Quotes the Right Way
The cheapest quote is rarely the best deal. When comparing proposals from different designers or architects, ensure you are comparing apples to apples. Does the quote include structural engineering fees? Does it include revisions? Does it cover the permit application process?
